Sometimes, it seems what constitutes a work being sexist or not (or racist) depends on who makes it.

A woman making a sexploitation film these days (like “Baise-Moi”) is considered a progressive feminist (because maybe she’s thought to be “appropriating” the inherent sexism of the form and “commenting” on it or answering it); Spike Lee called Quentin Tarantino to task for using the word “nigga” too many times in “Jackie Brown,” but maybe that’s only because he’s white?

Here's my argument about writing in the context of character.
