The
fetishy dirty movie”
A perverted metaphor for the artist’s project that will “save their lives,” it becomes the Holy Grail, salvation, finally … their only hope. I also poke fun at the movie-making (and narrative) process. At one point, Serena “goes Hollywood,” deluding herself into believing she’s actually some sort of cutting-edge filmmaker with a future along the lines of Martin Scorsese. This delusional state of mind is quite common in the arts (and possibly a necessary psychological function. [Don’t strippers also consider themselves to be “artistes?”] One’s ego must be protected at all costs.). It’s also a source of screwball comedy in the novel. |
